SENSEI KARL VARLEY - Sandan

Sensei Karl is an accomplished instructor with over 20 years continuous training in Kyokushin Karate. He began training as a teenager for fitness and soon began to enjoy the explosive style and hard training that personifies Kyokushin Karate. Sensei Karl now regularly trains overseas including Japan under some legendary instructors.

Sensei Karl gained international acclaim and respect for his amazing feats of determination and strength most notably in 2002 when he broke 30 baseball bats (see video) with his bare shins in 50 seconds to break the current World Guinness Record of 23.

Sensei Karl opened his first Dojo in 1997 and in 2005 founded the NZ Karate Association Kyokushinkaikan, highlighting his continued commitment to the New Zealand Martial Arts Community. In 2008 the organization was affiliated with the original Kyokushin organization in Japan, IKO Sosai, founded by Sosai Masutatsu Oyama. Sensei Karl is now the NZ Branch Chief of IKOK Sosai.


SENPAI HIROSHI NAKANO - Shodan

Senpai Hiroshi has been training since 1993.

Senpai Hiroshi achieved Shodan in 2003 and has been an instructor for many years, successfully leading junior and senior students through their kyu and shodan training.

SENPAI MARK GALLOWAY - Shodan

Senpai Mark is a 3 time New Zealand Full Contact Champion and former Ring Karate champion. Senpai Mark achieved Shodan in 2004.

He now coaches the Dojo fighters and has consistently led fighters to National honours.

Senpai Mark continues to regularly compete in national tournaments.

SENPAI ROB ENGELKEN - Shodan

Senpai Rob achieved his Shodan in 2009, at the age of 58, inspiring many with his determination and strength.

Senpai Rob is the mastermind behind the international Kyokushin Management System (KMS) and plays an international role through assistance with Honbu administration.

Senpai Rob is also the Kyokushin Canterbury club secretary and he coaches kids and adults classes.
